Kinematics Awarded Key Slew Drive Diagnostics Technology Patent

December 17, 2019, Phoenix, Arizona- Kinematics, the world’s leading slew drive manufacturer, and lead supplier to the Utility-Scale solar industry, announced today the award of a patent that aligns with the company’s roadmap to incorporate digital “smarts” into its actuator offerings, across multiple industries.

Kinematics’ new patent describes a foundational technology for slew drive diagnostics that allows measuring drive condition, remaining service life, efficiency, and performance – while the drive is in service and powered by an electric motor.

The capability to diagnose slew drives while in operation provides highly valuable benefits to users, including being made aware of, and responding to, potential issues before application up-time is negatively impacted, with access to aggregated drive data to monitor and analyze performance and reliability. A real-time diagnostic feedback loop aids in continuous application design improvements by giving designers quicker insights into field performance.

“Kinematics has over one-million drives in operation throughout the world,” said Mark Henderson, Kinematics CEO. “We’ve accumulated an unequaled amount of data over decades about drive performance and reliability, and as our customers enter the next stage of growth, enabling them to more easily diagnose drives to optimize service response times and assure maximum application up-time will be invaluable,” Henderson concluded.

Adam Plesniak, Kinematics Vice President of Product Development, stated, “The team here at Kinematics is very excited about this new patent, and the technology it represents. Its application to our products and customers will allow for in-service slew drive diagnostics across all applications we support”.
